One of my favorite actors, Alan Rickman passed on January 14th of this year. I’ve been mulling over doing a special piece dedicated to him and finally sat down last night to do so. I tried to using colors and shapes to represent joy rather than sadness since that’s what I feel when I look back and appreciate his talent. He was one of the few people I would have liked to have met.
I started with a color palette slightly different than my usual colors on 10″ x 14″ Watercolor paper using acrylic inks to create the wash.

Then added the ink framework and then the fills for balance.

Started to add light and color to further balance the image. I don’t usually paint with white but felt that light was needed.

Here is the finished piece.

A beautiful tribute. He was one of my favorites as well.
I always enjoy seeing the process. What brand of acrylic inks do you use?
Thanks for posting. I use Liquitex Inks and Soft Body Paints. They can really give you a feel as though you are painting with Gouache.
Alex, Nice! Love your tribute and interpretation of Rickman’s smile with the detailed lines and the addition of happy color to your work.
I also like Alan Rickman.
The new piece is lovely. I like your saturated color background.
Beautiful work, Alex. Thanks for sending it to us.
Beautiful painting! Cool to see photos of the process
Thanks, man. I’ve decided to continue and start a whole new series based on people I’ve admired in my life. It will be an eclectic mix but it will be fun and I will document each piece as I go.
Very cool, a beautiful artistic tribute to an actor who showed such great depth and humanity (even when he played villains).
Very cool, Alex! You have always been so creative, Alan surely would have appreciated your homage.
Alex, I absolutely love this tribute to Alan Rickman…I was so sad when he left this earth and your painting has cheered me. Also was delightful to see your process…so generous of you to share. I bought the stylus you suggested, but cannot use it as creatively as you do!!
